The purpose of the Legion of Mary is to increase the spirituality of its members and the parish through apostolic works and spread devotion to the Blessed Mother through recitation of the rosary.

Do you ever think about sharing the wonderful faith God has given you? Would you like to do this - to show your gratitude to Him - but are not quite sure just how to go about it? The Vatican Council stated, "All Christians are responsible for making the message of Christ known and accepted throughout the world." Actions usually speak louder than words, and for those who might be somewhat hesitant about vocally sharing their faith, they can follow Our Lord's commandment "Love one another as I have loved you" with their actions. Not only Jesus' words but His every action showed His great love for all of us, and we should follow His lead. We have a group of people who invite you to join them in trying to do just that: The Legion of Mary.

Pope John XXIII said, "The Legion of Mary presents the true face of the Catholic Church." Those who followed him have expressed similar sentiments.

The Legion of Mary is a worldwide organization which concentrates on prayer and work. It has a great variety of interests with an intensity of purpose and discipline, saturated with great devotion to Our Lord through His mother. It is filled with a willingness to render service to others by personal contact. It is a spiritual group - both men and women - offering love, understanding, time, sympathy and prayer.

There are two major groups: Active and Auxiliary. Active members meet weekly for 1 ½ hours for prayer, sharing of contacts and assignments. They give at least two hours of "work" weekly covering a variety of things in parish life. They are sent out "two by two" on their visits. The Auxiliaries are "Prayer Partners" - daily praying the Rosary and the special Legion prayers. Their prayers help the Active members in their work.

Our parish Legion of Mary presented their annual report to the Rochester Comitium. It was their forty eighth report. The Legion of Mary, under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception, was begun in 1955 by the late Msgr. Burns with Donald Murphy present. Don, after all these years, is still an active member. God bless him for his years of dedication to this worthy cause.

Some of their works include: Hospital visits, home visits, nursing home visits, attendance at wakes and funerals, bereavement calls, pro-life activities and working at a soup kitchen. What a great way to share the gospel message of Jesus by living out the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. If you are called to serve your neighbor through the Legion of Mary contact either Deacon Tom, the Spiritual Director or Mary Murphy, the President.
